Artists Statement
I work with a variety of mediums including chalk, oil pastel, coloured pencils and primarily oil and acrylic paint which are very versatile and lend its self well to creating textures. In some of my latest work I have employed the use of painting knives to make interesting shapes, not possible with brushes. While my work is mainly abstract and expressionistic, some of my inspiration is derived from beautiful colours, forms and textures of nature, in particular the night sky and the ocean. Rather than trying to replicate natural forms I prefer to use them as a starting point for my work. My driving force is the exploration of colour, how colours interact and the emotional responses they evoke. I tend not to impose titles on my paintings unless a particular work reveals a title as I feel a word can influence the experience of the viewer and suggest something that perhaps they might not have seen and affect their perception of the work, thus changing their individual experience with the piece. |
